Amy: What have you been pulled over1 for?
Curtis: I’ve been pulled over for tailgating2 an ambulance.
Amy: Oh, my God. I didn’t think that was the story he was going to pick.
Curtis: No, this is a very, very bad thing to do. I don’t recommend you doing this.
Amy: Okay. What’s tailgating?
Curtis: Tailgating is following somebody too close. So usually you have to leave a car
length in between the car in front of you and your car. And I at that point …
Amy: Had a very, very bad habit of driving way too close.
Curtis: Right. And in between–or I was in between the emergency ambulance vehicle in
front of me and a police car behind me. But I didn’t know it was a police car because it
didn’t have the lights.
Amy: Oh, it was a ghost car3.
Curtis: It was a ghost car.
Amy: Sneaky4.
Curtis: Or an unmarked car. Yeah.
Amy: Right. An unmarked car.
Curtis: And right away, he turned on his lights that were on his dashboard and the front of
his car and his siren. And he was mad.
Amy: He was.
Curtis: But I got lucky5 on that one too. Even though he was mad, he didn’t give me a
Amy: Yeah. Sometimes they let you off. They–like they let you off the hook6 or I don’t
know. They give you, what is it? A warning?
Curtis: A warning7

Amy: Yeah, they give you a warning. Don’t do it again. Oh, yeah. It’s a written warning.
And it goes on record that you’ve been warned about this. But they don’t actually give
you a fine.
Curtis: Yeah. He kept track of it for sure.

Phrase Explanations:

  1. Pulled over: Stopped by the police
  2. Tailgating: Driving very closely to the vehicle in front of you
  3. Ghost car: A police car with no lights or markings. Also known as an unmarked car.
  4. Sneaky: Doing something in a secret, unfair or not obvious way
  5. I got lucky: To have good luck unexpectedly
  6. Let you off the hook: When you get caught doing something wrong or illegal and you don’t get punished for it. ‘Let you off’ is the short way of expressing this.
  7. Warning: An official notice that you have been warned not to do something again

Real English Conversations

The Bridge Between Traditional ESL Classroom Education and Communication for the Real World

If this is your first checking out Real English Conversations, let me explain how we are different and why it works…

Instead of creating lessons based on a grammar textbook or curriculum, we base our lessons on real conversations.

We’ve turned natural ‘english conversations’ into audio lessons with specific exercises that focus on helping you to develop the most important communication skills: speaking, listening and the vocabulary people use in everyday life.

Everything on this website, all of our courses, and the lessons, have been created to help students like you to create a bridge between traditional ESL classroom education and ‘real world English’ that you need to make friends, get a job and feel confident communicating in English as an immigrant, for business purposes, or as a traveler.

About the Teachers on Real English Conversations

Curtis and I (Amy) are from Canada in North America. We have a passion for traveling and teaching real English to help students improve their communication skills.

In 2016, we sold our house and everything we owned to Mexico and focus on teaching English full-time.

Learning a language as an adult is hard!

After suffering for 14 years ‘learning’ a Spanish using the typical methods taught in textbooks and the classroom… I was barely able to speak and it was impossible to understand native speakers.

Finally, I decided to change the way I was learning a language to focus on speaking and listening development.

Within 6 months, I went from a useless beginner to an advanced level speaker where I could have conversations with real people.

In our English conversation lessons and courses, I’ll teach you the same ways to practice your English to quickly improve your speaking and listening skills with  the same techniques and unique methods I have discovered or created.

These are the same methods that helped me reach fluency and maintain my current conversation abilities my new language, even though, I don’t have less than 4 hours a week to practice.

To try our method and discover a different way of learning, I recommend checking out a sample lesson or registering as a Free Member.

We will you show you how you can use naturally spoken English conversations to:

  • Learn the vocabulary native speakers actually use
  • Understand more of what you hear
  • Practice speaking to use the new words you learned

Communicating in Real English Conversations – Closing the Gap

Traditional English courses are excellent for helping students learn the basics of the language. Students need to be taught how to form verb conjugations, proper sentence structure and pronunciation. Unfortunately, these skills will only teach you to pass writing and reading tests well, not to talk to real people in everyday conversations

To get to the next step, you need to start speaking Engish and develop your listening skills.

But… the only way you have ever learned a language is the way you were shown in English classes: learn more grammar, memorize more words, do more exercises that are centered around more advanced grammar.

This problem is the ‘learning gap’ that exists between learning about English and actually being able to have a real conversation.

If you are a student that knows quite a lot English (years of learning in some cases), but it is almost impossible for you to speak in English or understand anything that you hear – then you are in the ‘learning gap’.

Don’t worry, Real English Conversations is exactly what you need to make the transition from ‘traditional English courses’ to becoming a confident, fluent English speaker that is prepared to communicate in any situation.

English Courses Tend to Test Everything to Measure Your Progress

For most students, especially immigrants or people using English for their jobs, their goal is to confidently communicate in everyday life and real situations… not topass to pass a test.

Education systems have always been based on testing and measuring your level, knowledge and ability. Which is why English courses are built using activities that have a correct or incorrect answer, instead of being designed to develop skills.

The most effective activities to improve speaking and listening cannot be measured quickly and accurately however, the progress and confidence that our students feel about their conversation and communication skills is obvious when they do activities that are focused on developing the right skills.
